  • Hôtel Lenox Montparnasse

The flower-filled Lenox is close to Montparnasse cemetery, and despite the price, rooms are clean, with modern facilities. Some are on the small side so ask for a larger room: there is also a top-floor suite.

  • The Pergolèse manages to be both modern and welcoming. Couples seeking romance should book the best room, also called the Pergolèse, with its pale colours, skylight roof and luxurious open-plan bathroom.

  • Delightful hotel in an untouristed area of Paris. The rooms are compact but clean. Fifth-floor rooms have balconies; all have TV and phone.

  • One of the city’s finest hotels. The antique decor is reflected in the rooms but they have been fully modernized in terms of facilities. Higher floors have stunning Parisian views.

  • Across the rue de Rivoli from the Louvre (see Musée du Louvre) with views of the Tuileries, this is a splendid old hotel.

  • This charmingly modest hotel offers unique character and a Left Bank location at bargain prices. The rooms are tiny, but for a cheap bolt-hole and truly Parisian Bohemian feel, it can’t be beaten.

  • This hotel is unlike any other – one room even sports its own flying buttress. Carved bedboards and other features ensure an historical experience.

  • This 17th-century building has antique furniture and some rooms have four-poster beds. Some also overlook the Jardin du Luxembourg.

  • Hotel Square

Boutique-style hotel with 22 rooms and views down the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. Slightly out of the centre, but makes up for it with style.

  • Numerous Left Bank attractions are near this comfortable hotel with family rooms and cots available. Almost all the rooms are en-suite and have telephone and TV.
