  • The sumptuous antique decor of the Meurice may not be original, but you would never know it. The fading hotel has been completely restored rather than just refurbished, creating spacious guest rooms and state-of-the-art facilities, while retaining a traditional feel. And the location could not be better.

  • The best hotel in the Marais, convenient for all the attractions of the area (see Marais and the Bastille). Lovely rooms and a quiet courtyard.

  • Surrounded by designer shops is this venerable but modernized hotel. Alain Ducasse has a restaurant in the hotel (see Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée).

  • Right by the Louvre museum and therefore with easy access to many of the city’s main sights, several rooms can be combined, and some suites too. Decor varies from traditional to bright and modern, so state which you prefer.

  • Relais St-Germain

There are four apartments for rent in this hotel, close to the Jardin du Luxembourg for when the children simply want to play in the park. All have their own cooking facilities, which will help keep down the cost of a family holiday.

  • A collection of studios with kitchen facilities, cots and extra beds make up for the slightly out-of-centre location. Parc Monceau and a good market are nearby.

  • Résidence Lord Byron

An inexpensive hotel in an expensive area, with a pleasant courtyard garden for summer breakfasts. Top floor rooms are cheaper because the elevator doesn’t go that far, but they do have good views.

  • The Ritz has never lost its glamour and still attracts visiting film stars, royalty and politicians. Antique furniture is backed up by every modern requirement.

  • The Terrass has fabulous views over Paris which can be enjoyed from its rooftop terrace. Most rooms in this early 19th-century building are now air-conditioned; all are comfortable. There is a bar, restaurant and other facilities.

  • This hotel was built in the 18th century and has only been a hotel for 20 years, combining modern facilities with English-style furnishings.
