Central Paris has more than enough on offer to keep any visitor occupied, but if time permits you should make at least one foray out of the centre, whether your interest is in the sumptuous Palace of Versailles, former home of the “Sun King” Louis XIV, or in the Magic Kingdom of Disneyland Paris. The excellent metro system makes for easy day trips to the area’s two main parks, the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes, for a wide range of outdoor activities, from boating to riding or in-line skating, or just strolling amid pleasant greenery. In contrast to these bucolic pleasures is the cutting-edge modern architecture of La Défense. Visually stunning, it comprises Paris’s st’ylish new business district to the west of the city, with added attractions in its exhibition centres. Two large cemeteries outside the centre are worth a visit for their ornate tombs.

A small but homely hotel on Ile de la Jatte. The staff are friendly and helpful, speaking perfect English. Rooms overlook the courtyard or the River Seine. The hotel is only a short metro ride away from central Paris (approx. 20 mins including walking into Neuilly-sur-Seine town centre to the stop), but its residential location means it is peaceful overnight. A buffet style breakfast is included. The price is a bargain, and the hotel often has 3 for 2 night deals on over the weekend!

Amazing 110 metre high marble Arch with great views over Paris from the top, which is reached by a transparent tube elevator. Also there, is a huge shopping centre together with a massive paved open area, all surrounded by modern skyscrapers

An exquisite little chateau in France - not too big but like a tiny ornate jewel box. The crowds all swarm to Versailles allowing you to wander around in relative peace and quiet. It also had an interesting and tragic history as the home of Fouquet, a friend to artists and faithful minister to Louis XIV. His wealth and popularity led to his imprisonment and death at the hands of the suspicious king.
