  • 1. Hôtel des Grandes Écoles

A secret hideaway in a lovely part of Paris, the two buildings that make up this 51-room hotel are set around a garden. The rooms are attractively decorated and the location is perfect for exploring the Latin Quarter.

  • 2. Hôtel Lenox Montparnasse

The flower-filled Lenox is close to Montparnasse cemetery, and despite the price, rooms are clean, with modern facilities. Some are on the small side so ask for a larger room: there is also a top-floor suite.

  • 3. Hôtel Saint-André-des-Arts

This charmingly modest hotel offers unique character and a Left Bank location at bargain prices. The rooms are tiny, but for a cheap bolt-hole and truly Parisian Bohemian feel, it can’t be beaten.

  • 4. Hôtel Keppler

Book well ahead for a room in the Keppler, with its inexpensive prices in an expensive part of Paris. Rooms are spacious and provide the basic comforts – a few have balconies. The management ensures that cheap prices do not mean cheap service.

  • 5. Grand Hôtel Lévêque

The only thing grand about this hotel is its name, but it remains a favourite with those needing budget accommodation in Paris. Despite the price, almost all rooms have fans, phone, TV, hairdryer and even a modem socket.

  • 6. Hôtel de Lille

If you want a cheap central hotel, they come no cheaper nor more central than the Lille, just a minute’s walk from the Louvre Museum. Rooms are clean but basic, and there is no breakfast and no elevator serving the five floors.

  • 7. Le Caulaincourt Square Hôtel

You may not get luxury but you do get a friendly atmosphere and access to the sights of Montmartre.

  • 8. Hôtel Plessis

Delightful hotel in an untouristed area of Paris. The rooms are compact but clean. Fifth-floor rooms have balconies; all have TV and phone.

  • 9. Hôtel du Globe

Set in a 17th-century building near the Jardin du Luxembourg, flowers fill the rooms and some have four-poster beds.

  • 10. Ermitage Hôtel

A wonderful family-run hotel in Montmartre. Some rooms have views over the city, others overlook a garden, and the furniture is antique or repro.
