  • 1. La Régence Étoile Hôtel

Very reasonably priced for its standard and location (a short walk from the Arc de Triomphe), the Régence has plush public areas and modern bedrooms with TVs, direct-dial phones, mini-bars and safe.

  • 2. Hôtel d’Angleterre

Hemingway once stayed in this long-established hotel. Most rooms are a good size with high ceilings, and some are decorated with antiques. The standard rooms are small so book a superior one at extra cost.

  • 3. l’Abbaye Saint-Germain

This 16th-century former convent has a cobbled courtyard in a quiet location near St-Sulpice. It is perfect for exploring much of the Left Bank, and is a haven to return to afterwards. The 46 rooms are all different, the best being the top-floor suites with their rooftop views.

  • 4. Hôtel de Seine

Timbered rooms indicate the old-world nature of this mansion, close to the Jardin du Luxembourg. Some rooms have balconies.

  • 5. Hôtel Ferrandi

This bargain hotel combines old-fashioned comfort with modern convenience. A bonus is the hotel’s car park.

  • 6. Hôtel Le Clos Médicis

Built in 1773 for the Médici family, ancient beams and artworks now combine with modern design for a special place to stay. Rooms are small, but compensations are the garden, adjacent bar, and the location in a quiet street off boulevard St-Michel.

  • 7. Hotel des Trois Poussins

In the Pigalle area but well away from the sleazy side. Some rooms are small, but the higher they go, the better the view.

  • 8. Hôtel Saint-Merry

This hotel is unlike any other – one room even sports its own flying buttress. Carved bedboards and other features ensure an historical experience.

  • 9. Hôtel Saint-Paul

This 17th-century building has antique furniture and some rooms have four-poster beds. Some also overlook the Jardin du Luxembourg.

  • 10. Hôtel de Banville

This wonderful 1928 mansion may be away from the centre but it oozes class and is filled with antiques. Several rooms have four-poster beds.
