Prague

At the geographical heart of Europe, Prague’s beautiful cityscape has been carved and sustained by a variety of emperors, artists and religious communities, from the Gothic exuberance of its castle and cathedral, to the dignity of the medieval Jewish Cemetery, and the 19th-century opulence of the “new” town. Under Communist rule, Prague was off the tourist map, but since 1989 the city has seen a surge of visitors eager to take in this spectacular city.

  • A successful blend of Continental and traditional Czech dishes. Graceful ambience and an excellent list of French and domestic wines.

  • Situated in a country setting just a 15-minute walk from Prague Castle. The attic bedroom is furnished with antiques. Available only from April through October. Minimum three-night stay.

  • Built in 1372 on the steep hill overlooking the city, this small hotel is a stone’s throw from Prague Castle. Each of the nine rooms has views of Petřín Hill and thoughtful amenities such as rocking chairs.

  • The Don Giovanni offers excellent value in the form of its 400 elegant rooms and 43 suites. Guests can take advantage of the spa-treatment facilities and baby-sitting service. The hotel is conveniently located near metro, bus and tram stops.

  • Dorotheum offices throughout the world trace their roots back to the Vienna pawn-broking office, established by Emperor Josef I in 1707. A member of the Association of International Auctioneers, Dorotheum holds large auctions several times a year and maintains a large sales gallery of silverware, fine china, jewellery, art and other collectors’ items.

  • Dr Stuart’s Botanicus

Here you’ll find oils and salts for that hot bath your travel-weary feet crave, as well as perfumes, candles, soaps and every natural health and beauty product you can imagine. Branches are scattered around town but the main one is off the Old Town Square.

  • The store’s all-natural health and beauty products are produced at a “historic village” east of Prague; enquire about tours. Herbs, oils and other seasonings, too.

  • St Wenceslas’s mother was, by all accounts, an unpleasant woman. She killed her mother-inlaw and might have done in her son, too, but the gates of hell swallowed her up before she could act. She sometimes wheels through Loretanská náměstí in a fiery carriage.

  • From the House at the Red Lion, guests can see either Prague Castle and Nerudova to the north or Petřín Hill to the south. The 17th-century painter Petr Brandl was born here. Guests will find it hard to leave room No. 32.

  • Also known by its address Na Kampě 15, the “House at Charles Bridge” is close enough to the river that guests can hear the Vltava rushing over the weir. The rooms and suites are warmly furnished in a country style.
