Prague

At the geographical heart of Europe, Prague’s beautiful cityscape has been carved and sustained by a variety of emperors, artists and religious communities, from the Gothic exuberance of its castle and cathedral, to the dignity of the medieval Jewish Cemetery, and the 19th-century opulence of the “new” town. Under Communist rule, Prague was off the tourist map, but since 1989 the city has seen a surge of visitors eager to take in this spectacular city.

  • After the Church Council at Constance burned Catholic reformer Jan Hus at the stake in 1415 (see Jan Hus Memorial), his followers literally beat their ploughshares into swords and rebelled against both church and crown. The resulting animosity between Protestant Czechs and German Catholics would rage for centuries.

  • On this date in 1918 Czechoslovakia declared itself independent of Austro-Hungary.

  • The Inter-Continental pulls out all the stops for its Club-Level guests, but all visitors will feel pampered. The large fitness centre has exercise machines, a swimming pool and a putting green. On a budget? Rooms with city views are less expensive than those overlooking the Vltava.

  • Reitman, now US-based, is best known for directing the hit Ghostbusters .
