Prague

At the geographical heart of Europe, Prague’s beautiful cityscape has been carved and sustained by a variety of emperors, artists and religious communities, from the Gothic exuberance of its castle and cathedral, to the dignity of the medieval Jewish Cemetery, and the 19th-century opulence of the “new” town. Under Communist rule, Prague was off the tourist map, but since 1989 the city has seen a surge of visitors eager to take in this spectacular city.

  • The most civilized way to watch the Old Town Hall’s clock go through its hourly paces is from here, cappuccino in hand.

  • Prague was introduced to the tango here, and the back rooms hosted cabaret during the First Republic. It still offers a good time.

  • Café Obecní dům

Dressed to the nines in Art Nouveau splendour, the Municipal House café glitters as a grand piano tinkles in the background. Stop in for breakfast.

  • An out-of-the-way, peaceful café in the castle’s Gardens on the Bastion, where you can rest over a cup of tea or coffee. Light snacks, too.

  • You might expect this coffeehouse to be a rip-off like many other establishments on the square, but it actually offers great value. Good service, too.

  • This sleek theatre bar fills quickly during intermission and after the curtain has come down. The theatre also hosts English-language readings from time to time.

  • Buy a candle large enough to need its own seat on the plane or one of this store’s smaller, natural-beeswax creations.

  • Cantina

The best Mexican food in Prague. The fajitas are great; try the chicken and banana variety. Book ahead.

  • Casa Marcello’s elegantly appointed rooms embrace their 12th-century character; wandering the hotel’s many stairs and hallways, you’ll think you’re in an Escher print. There is a small fitness club and excellent restaurant on the premises.

  • In the 18th century, occupying French troops drilled holes in Vyšehrad rock to store ammunition.
