  • The shoebox-sized cellar at “Little Glenn’s” has to be Prague’s smallest jazz venue. The music ranges from African-inspired drumming to blues to modern jazz, and most of it is of a high standard. Upstairs is a café where you can get reasonable food and brunch at weekends. From the same entrepreneurs who brought you Bohemia Bagel.

  • The cold Budvar served here is the best. If they’re serving homemade sausage, don’t miss it.

  • The name is bigger than the café. Serves good coffee, homemade pastries and a dozen flavours of ice cream.

  • The name “At the Shot-Out Eye” is a tribute to the half-blind Hussite general Jan Žižka from whom Žižkov takes its name and whose enormous statue looms overhead (see Žižkov TV Tower>).

  • Serving imported teas, sandwiches and salads, “At the Green Tea” offers a welcome change from the ubiquitous beer and fried food.

  • This tiny wine cellar sells excellent imported and domestic wines. If the tables out front are full, take your bottle to Petřín Hill.

  • U Zlatého tygra

This legendary pub, famed as the haunt of the late writer Bohumil Hrabal, serves the finest mug of Pilsner Urquell in the city. Regulars were nonplussed when President Václav Havel brought former US president Bill Clinton in for a cold glass, so don’t expect them to take much interest in you. If you find a seat, it probably means one of the regulars has died.

  • The ground floor is a simple, convivial bar and restaurant. After you’ve had your fill, you’ll find a music club downstairs, where you can dance. Open until 4am.

  • A sports bar for serious fans. Watch sports on their multiple screens while dripping barbecue sauce down your front.

  • Tucked into a residential neighbourhood is one of the city’s less hectic nightspots. Good food and drink. Summer guests can enjoy the view from the large patio.
