Across the street from Franz Kafka’s birthplace, with unobstructed views of St Nicholas and Týn churches, the Black Fox is the only hotel on Old Town Square. There are more graceful places to stay, but few as well situated. Only 12 rooms, so book early.
-
The Evangelic Church of the Czech Brethren puts its hospitality skills to the test at this small guesthouse. The rooms are suitably austere; not all have en-suite baths. Being a Christian affair, you may encounter a prayer group in the common room. The hosts are very pleasant.
-
Located well outside the centre, the Comfort is nearer Ruzyně Airport than downtown. There are 135 basic but clean rooms, all with satellite TV, and there’s a useful on-site car park and fitness centre with sauna.
-
Situated in a country setting just a 15-minute walk from Prague Castle. The attic bedroom is furnished with antiques. Available only from April through October. Minimum three-night stay.
-
Built in 1372 on the steep hill overlooking the city, this small hotel is a stone’s throw from Prague Castle. Each of the nine rooms has views of Petřín Hill and thoughtful amenities such as rocking chairs.
-
The Don Giovanni offers excellent value in the form of its 400 elegant rooms and 43 suites. Guests can take advantage of the spa-treatment facilities and baby-sitting service. The hotel is conveniently located near metro, bus and tram stops.
-
From the House at the Red Lion, guests can see either Prague Castle and Nerudova to the north or Petřín Hill to the south. The 17th-century painter Petr Brandl was born here. Guests will find it hard to leave room No. 32.
-
Also known by its address Na Kampě 15, the “House at Charles Bridge” is close enough to the river that guests can hear the Vltava rushing over the weir. The rooms and suites are warmly furnished in a country style.
-
Tasteful but not elegant. Skip the breakfast and dig in to an Irish fry-up at the James Joyce downstairs.
-
Swaddled in the Four Seasons trademark luxury, guests may forget where they are. A quick stroll on the riverside terrace should remind them. The restaurant Allegro is one of Prague’s best. Top-notch, all around.
