  • Recently acquired by Best Western, the Kampa is a happy blend of the familiar standards and local peculiarity; the in-house restaurant takes the hotel’s medieval arms-and-armour theme to a delightful extreme. The 84 rooms are smallish, but quite cosy.

  • Located just a stone’s throw from the centre, this is an ideal base to explore the city. It offers dorms as well as private rooms with en- suite bathrooms. Slightly more expensive are the apartments on the opposite side of the street, complete with kitchen.

  • A bit old fashioned, but the staff try very hard. Close to Karlovo Náměstí and the New Town Hall.

  • The Ibis’s more graceful big sister. With underground parking, a small gym and swimming pool, piano bar and Continental restaurant, the Novotel offers a budget version of luxury. Children under 16 stay free.

  • Pension Cora

Located in a peaceful villa-quarter in southeast Prague, the Cora is not central, but nearby buses and the pension’s cars can take you anywhere you need to go. Amenities include satellite TV and a billiard room. The hosts serve a big breakfast.

  • Pension Denisa

Newly reconstructed to high standards, the Denisa sits in a quiet neighbourhood just steps from the metro. The 35 rooms each have refrigerator and satellite TV; plus, your hosts bring breakfast to your room.

  • The quiet house on the banks of the Čertovka canal is the birthplace of architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, who built the nearby Church of St Nicholas and other Baroque edifices. The garden is idyllic. Very hospitable.

  • Five km (3 miles) from the city centre. There are 10 rooms, each with its own bath and satellite TV. Outdoor swimming pool.

  • Just around the corner from Charles Bridge, this modest guesthouse is in the heart of Old Town. Very lively.

  • First-rate accommodation in a Jugendstil house along the Vltava. Nine double rooms and two suites. Guests have use of a private garage. Children under seven stay free.
