  • 1. La Fabrique

A complete menu and impressive international wine list set this sophisticated cocktail bar and music club apart from the crowd. Largely undiscovered, so you won’t have trouble finding a table.

  • 2. Karlovy lázně

Bruce Willis jammed here when in town. Weekends find a queue of young clubbers stretching along the river bank waiting to get in to these remodelled municipal baths. Four levels of clubbing, from classic rock to DJs and, occasionally, live bands.

  • 3. Roxy

The Old Town’s most exciting club. In addition to the best dance parties in town, the former cinema hosts experimental theatre, live bands and art exhibitions.

  • 4. M1

This “secret lounge” in the Old Town is perfectly suited to trendy kids in the know. It is open nightly, and the varied musical offers reflect the social mix.

  • 5. Tom Tom Club

A relaxed café and cocktail bar. Good drinks, coffees and beer on tap in a Mediterranean setting. And if you get the urge to dance, Roxy is across the street.

  • 6. Damuza

Places like this smoky student hang-out, where they serve Turkish coffee in glasses, are increasingly hard to find. With cheap food and drink, it’s a great place to meet young locals.

  • 7. Keltic

Spacious, comfortable ground-level rooms, good food and friendly staff.

  • 8. Friends

The name fits. Prague’s best gay cocktail bar has a steady following among expat and local men who are less interested in cruising than in just having a drink with like-minded folks. The owner Michael will tell you what’s what.

  • 9. Jazz Club Železná (Mecca)

Some of the city’s edgiest jazz artists take to the stage at this club. Železná has left its entertaining labyrinthine venue and moved to Mecca, in Holešovice (see Mecca). Table service remains a bit off-hand.

  • 10. Jazz Club U Staré paní

Prague’s favourite jazz club may not look like much from the outside, but the best local acts perform here regularly to full houses. Relatively high cover charges can’t keep fans away.
