1. Hotel Kafka
The name may evoke some anxiety, but no guests at the sedate Kafka have woken to find themselves metamorphosed into beetles. The apartments can accommodate up to seven people. Good value.

2. Botel Racek
Floating on the Vltava’s right bank, near the local yacht club and the city’s large swimming and diving arena, the Racek offers 70 rooms, a restaurant and a top-deck disco. Nearby trams will take you to the centre in 10 minutes.

3. Botel Albatros
The Albatros fancies itself romantic; enjoying a drink on the deck, gazing at Prague Castle you’d be inclined to agree. Old Town Square is a 10-minute walk away. The cabins are small, as befits a boat, but cosy.

4. Botel Admiral
Moored across the river from Palackého náměstí and the modern spires of Emmaus Monastery, the Admiral offers 84 tiny rooms. Travellers who prefer more space should book one of the four apartments. Laundry and dry-cleaning services.

5. Hotel Cloister Inn
The Jesuits founded the cloister that gives the hotel its name. They were followed by the Grey Sisters of St Francis, who were in turn replaced by the secret police. The 73 rooms are somewhat joyless, but are good value for the neighbourhood.

Near Stromovka park, the Expo’ was built to accommodate visitors attending trade fairs at the adjacent exhibition grounds. The 105 rooms each have satellite TV, video and minibar. Unwind in the sauna or have a massage.

7. Hotel Pyramida
This large hotel near Prague Castle resembles an Aztec pyramid. Trams stopping outside whisk guests along a scenic route to the city centre in minutes. There’s a large fitness centre on the premises as well as hairdressers, a florist and a cinema.

The hotel sits in a picturesque valley on the city’s southern edge, near the confluence of the Berounka and the Vltava. Among the rooms, those in the garret are especially charming.

9. Hotel Radegast
The Radegast isn’t the only hotel named after a brand of beer, but it is the nicest, located close to the Bílá Hora battlefield monument and Divoka Šárka wilderness park. The 22 rooms are basic, but comfortable. Nearby buses run to the centre and to Ruzyně airport.

10. Domeček ve Střešovicích
Situated in a country setting just a 15-minute walk from Prague Castle. The attic bedroom is furnished with antiques. Available only from April through October. Minimum three-night stay.
