  • Get the Monaco look at an affordable price at this shopping centre which houses a selection of designer shops selling prêt-à-porter clothes, shoes and accessories.

  • Cannes’ esplanade is a great place for shopping or window-shopping, with famous labels such as Chanel (appropriately, at No. 5) Christian Dior (No. 38), Celine (No. 24), Louis Vuitton (No. 44) and Cartier (No. 57).

  • Not only a good wine shop and delicatessen but also a restaurant and sophisticated take-away outlet. In addition, it’s open every night until 2am.

  • The oldest bakery in town and, since 1781, home of the traditional Marseillais navette , a small biscuit (cookie) flavoured with orange blossom and, aptly for this port city, shaped like a boat.

  • This open-air market overflows with flowers, seasonal fruit and vegetables, fresh fish and local products. It’s a great place to buy Provençal delicacies to take home. Open daily except Sunday. On Mondays, it becomes a flea market.

  • Another warehouse and full, this time, of olives, olive preparations and olive derivatives such as tapenade or melet (fennel, peppers, olives and anchovies).

  • The company has been producing and printing Provençal fabrics since 1818. It’s now the only such outfit in the region, with materials, table linen and wedding gowns.

  • Californian Linda Lorentz is one of Provence’s best goat’s cheese producers. Find her by snaking up the road from the village towards Viens, or at Apt’s market.

  • Not one shop but more than 200 make this little town France’s most important antiques and second-hand centre after Paris. Grouped into seven centres, most are open Saturday to Monday, with a market on Sunday mornings. Antiques fairs at Easter and around 15 August.

  • Now known well beyond Marseille, Zaza’s ethnic-style clothes are celebrated for their creativity and playfulness.
