-
Upwards of 3,000 sheep cram into the old village, for an old-style sheep drive (transhumance ) to upland summer pastures. Along with sheep, goats and donkeys are shepherds in traditional costume, food displays and feasting.

St Remy's "running of the sheep" (Transhumace) is a great event to witness. It has become quite a tourist event, but to see the shepherds proudly driving the sheep around the village peripherique is very moving and the excitement of the local children is infectious. Book a table at one of the restaurants in the village for a long lunch as you will meet lots of people in town for the Transhumance, all excited by the age old traditions. There is lots of music during and after the procesion. The evening before is also good in the village where traditional dancers practise before the day. Or, if you want to do something simple, pack a picnic and go to the Croix where the shepherds rest the sheep. There is also food available here, but you have to book. Contact the Tourist Office in St Remy de Provence to check how you can do this. I have attended at least 6 Festivals and highly recommend it. I can also recommend booking at Mas du Cornud for the Regional Transhumance feast if you are happy to pay a bit more. Guests enjoy great food & hospitality with Nito & David Carpita and the petanque matches are quite competitive. A beautiful private hotel and worth a stay.
