  • 1. L’Oustau de Baumanière, Les-Baux-de-Provence

This up-market boutique hotel offers exclusive luxury at a price to match. Choose from suites or rooms in a complex of beautifully restored old buildings with immaculate garden terraces and a superb restaurant.

  • 2. Moulin de la Camandoule, Fayence

A swimming pool shaded beneath trees, excellent food, and a delightful location hidden away among vines and pines make this converted olive mill one of the most peaceful and pleasant places to stay.

  • 3. Le Côteau Fleuri, Grimaud

High above the coast on the flanks of the Massif des Maures, this traditional inn on the outskirts of Grimaud also serves excellent food. In summertime, meals are served on an exquisitely pretty garden terrace with excellent views.

  • 4. La Riboto de Taven, Les-Bauxde-Provence

The “valley of hell” may seem an unlikely location for a romantic hideaway, but the Riboto de Taven, beneath the twisted rocks of the Val d’Enfer, is just that. Great scenery, gardens and a pretty pool add to its appeal.

  • 5. Le Cagnard, Cagnes-sur-Mer

Only a few minutes’ drive from the hurly burly of the Riviera, Le Cagnard is a luxury inn, with lovely rooms in a medieval building, sweeping views and a fine restaurant. All this, and it’s located in a pretty village literally drowning in bougainvillea.

  • 6. Grande Bastide, St-Paul-de-Vence

This converted country house just outside St-Paul-de-Vence (though it’s too far to walk, save for the most nippy) is calm, friendly and peaceful, with a pool under palm trees and an immaculately kept garden. Rooms and suites are furnished and decorated in Provençal style, and there are pretty views.

  • 7. La Pérouse, Nice

A hidden luxury retreat, La Pérouse has the most outstanding views of Nice’s promenade. Choose a sea-view room with its own terrace.

  • 8. Hôtel les Deux Rocs, Seillans

Located in a perfectly preserved medieval hill village, Les Deux Rocs is charming in an old-fashioned way. It has a delightful terrace on a tiny cobbled square, and a good restaurant serving the best of Provençale cooking.

  • 9. Hôtel Villa la Roseraie,Vence

This friendly small hotel has a small pool and courtyard. Rooms are prettily furnished. Ideal for a romantic weekend getaway at an affordable price.

  • 10. La Ponche, St-Tropez

Stylish, individual and hidden away in a tiny square with a view of the fishing port, this hotel is in the perfect place to escape the mayhem of the town in summer.
