Top 10 Under Canvas Choices
-
1. Camping International
There are numerous camp sites in and around Castellane but this is the best of the bunch. It is close enough to shops and restaurants to be convenient, but far enough away to be untroubled by noise or traffic. The site is surrounded by fields and wooded hills, and the views are terrific. Facilities include a large swimming pool, small supermarket and a friendly, value-for-money restaurant. Cabins are also available.
-
2. Camping des Oliviers
This small camp site amid olive trees on a hillside is within easy reach of Cannes and Antibes but is in a very quiet location. It has a simple snack restaurant and bar, but the main attraction is the swimming pool, on a terrace with panoramic views.
-
3. Camping Antipolis
The best thing about this enormous, 4-star full-service camp site is its location, just outside Antibes, minutes from the sea and with a local railway station with frequent connections into Cannes. An excellent choice for families.
-
4. Les Cigales
Billing itself as an “open-air hotel”, this camp site just west of Cannes has spaces for tents and caravans under the olive trees, cabins and mobile homes to rent, and a pool with a toddlers’ lagoon. The site is on a river with boats, kayaks and pedalos to rent.
-
5. Camping la Pinède
A cheap and cheerful alternative to St Tropez’s hotels – with better facilities too, including a mini-golf course, children’s play area, restaurant and snack bar.
-
6. Camping Abri de Camargue
This clean, medium-sized camp site is near a sandy beach. The site has an indoor and outdoor pool, a children’s play area, its own cinema, bar, shop and restaurant, and pétanque (boules) and tennis courts nearby.
-
7. Le Rossignol
A 3-star camp site with a pool, spaces for tents and motorhomes, and 4-person bungalows.
-
8. La Merio
This small 1-star site with space for 40 tents is in the heart of the Parc National du Mercantour (see Parc National du Mercantour). Not a luxury site, but it does offer unlimited hot showers.
-
9. Camping le Pesquier
This 2-star camp site has a small pool, and tents are pitched under shady trees.
-
10. Camping les Romarins
This 2-star site is spartan, but worth it for the views along the coast. There is a snack-restaurant and bar.
