1. Palais des Papes
The medieval papal palace dominates the town (see Palais des Papes).

2. Cathédrale Notre-Dame-des-Doms
The medieval popes’ cathedral has 17th-century alterations but a 13th-century altar.

3. Pont St-Bénézet
The 13th-century bridge once had 22 arches across the Rhône. Flood damage has reduced it to just four arches which stop midstream (see Pont d’Avignon).

4. Musée Calvet
A particularly fine museum, with collections from ancient Greece to the 20th century.

5. Rue des Teinturiers
The tiny street used to be home to dye-workers (hence the waterwheels). It now buzzes with arty cafés.

Built on the old forum, the city’s nerve centre is fringed with restaurants, bars and the 19th-century town hall.

This private collection includes works by Cézanne, Manet, Picasso, and a Van Gogh painting.
