Rome

Although functioning as a vibrant, modern capital akin to any in Europe, the unique appeal of Rome is that the entire city is a vast, 3,000-year-old, indoor-outdoor museum. In every quarter you’ll find ancient monuments, art treasures and timeless architecture in churches, galleries and protected ruins. Home to the world’s smallest city, the Vatican, Rome has religion at its heart and history in its soul – a city that dazzles and inspires visitors time and time again.

  • Piazza Pasquino 73 Rome

very small cosy little restaurant, food a bit above average, atmosphere is great.

dont go to early for lunch or you;ll be sitting alone. try eating at 1pm and it will be just starting to overflow.

great wine selection, no tourists to speak of.

  • A Yarn Shop packed to the ceilings with yarn and needles. It's near Termini on Via Principe Amedeo between Via Gioberti and Via Carlo Cattaneo (on the right hand side if you are walking towards Piazza Vittorio and the food markets.

  • You can get a great view of the Roman Forum at dusk from the back of the Capitoline Museum. No need to pay into the museum, just pop around the back and you get a great panoramic view of the Forum. Great at any time of day, but best a dusk.

  • Hostaria Isidoro al colosseo

Hostaria Isidoro al colosseo, once a convent in 1600, is situated near the colosseum. It's a nice restaurant where you can eat grilled meat and good pasta- they have an enormous choise- It's a friendly envirement and prices are very reasonable.

  • Hotel Genio

Via Zanardelli n° 28. Hotel Genio Rome is a five stories neo-renassaince building, completely renewed with a wonderful terrace on the top where you can have an overlook of the whole center of Rome and its monuments.

  • This is a small family run hotel situated beside the Collosseum and within walking distance of the Domus Aurea, the Forum and the Palatine. It's convenience is matched by it's relaxed yet efficient atmosphere and it's friendly staff, who are directed by the owner, Mrs.Khan in person. I have to go back!

  • Hotel Mercure Delta Colosseo

It may look a bit modern but the surroundings could hardly be more ancient. You can see the colosseum as soon as you step out of the door and its only a short walk in the other direction to St John Lateran, the parish church of Rome. The ideal place to be if you don't fancy playing sardines on the city's public transport.

  • A small (6 rooms) 'boutique' hotel situated a 10 minute walk away from the Vatican. Quite hard to find from the outside as it is situated on the second floor of an appartment/office building and in a row of shops/ building societies, banks etc -lovely inside (lots of marble etc). The staff were very friendly and helpful and our room was very nice.
