Rome

Although functioning as a vibrant, modern capital akin to any in Europe, the unique appeal of Rome is that the entire city is a vast, 3,000-year-old, indoor-outdoor museum. In every quarter you’ll find ancient monuments, art treasures and timeless architecture in churches, galleries and protected ruins. Home to the world’s smallest city, the Vatican, Rome has religion at its heart and history in its soul – a city that dazzles and inspires visitors time and time again.

  • If you are waiting for a train, or visiting the museums across the square from the station, the supermarket in the downstairs shopping arcade is handy for cold drinks, pizza and other refreshments to keep body and soul together - and much cheaper than nearby cafes.

  • The Capuchin Crypt. An amazing set of rooms beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini on the Via Veneto. It is the final resting place for over 4,000 Capuchin monks. Their bones are arranged in intricate patterns, their skulls are piled high in formations, some bones hang from the ceiling as working light fixtures, and there are mummified holy men, still in their religious garb. It sounds grisly, but it’s actually very moving and life-affirming. The message is: Live your life to the full while you’re here; a very Italian sentiment.

  • The Roman Forum was the political and economical centre of Ancient Rome but by the end of the 4th Century it was reduced to a monumental area.

The Forum is located in a valley between the Capitoline Hill on the west, the Palatine Hill on the south, the Velia on the east and Quirinal Hill and the Esquiline Hill to the north.

It is so very worth a visit. It will make you feel as though you have gone back in time! I could almost hear Frankie Howard saying 'A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum .........' (Titter ye not!)
