The Capuchin Crypt
-
The Capuchin Crypt. An amazing set of rooms beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini on the Via Veneto. It is the final resting place for over 4,000 Capuchin monks. Their bones are arranged in intricate patterns, their skulls are piled high in formations, some bones hang from the ceiling as working light fixtures, and there are mummified holy men, still in their religious garb. It sounds grisly, but it’s actually very moving and life-affirming. The message is: Live your life to the full while you’re here; a very Italian sentiment.
