San Diego

Blessed by a sunny climate that never varies ten degrees from moderate and a splendid setting along the Pacific Ocean, San Diegans can well boast they live the California Dream. Although non-stop outdoor recreation, a vibrant downtown, and world-class attractions keep the city’s spirit young, its heart lies in its Spanish beginnings as the birthplace of California.

  • Coronado Bridge

This distinctive bridge links Coronado to San Diego. Its gradual incline and curve allows cars to maintain speed, and the bridge sits high enough to allow aircraft carriers to pass beneath at high tide (see Coronado Bridge).

  • Coronado, downtown, and San Diego harbor sparkle both day and night.

  • Corvette Diner

Cruise back to the 1950s in this diner decorated with hub-caps, vintage gas station signs, and a yellow Corvette.

  • Corvette Diner

James Dean photos, neon, and 1950s road-trip artifacts adorn this diner’s walls; burgers are named Kookie and Eddie; and a shiny Corvette sits as a shrine in this retro Hillcrest hangout. Libations from the full bar help dull the sensory onslaught.

  • Costa Brava

The aromas of authentic Spanish cooking will fire up your appetite on entering this restaurant. Sit under minimal whitewashed walls at the bar or outside, and savor the best tapas in San Diego. Guitarists, dancers, and satellite feeds of Spanish football entertain on occasion.

  • Southwestern and Mexican-style appetizers and an extensive tequila menu keep this single’s hunting ground jumping.

  • Butter burgers, veggie baskets, and honey-glazed pork chops are popular items at this old-fashioned diner.

  • Croce’s Jazz Bar & Croce’s Top Hat

Ingrid Croce opened Gaslamp’s first club in tribute to her late husband, singer/songwriter Jim Croce, in 1985. The Jazz Bar features traditional, contemporary, and Latin live jazz, while the Top Hat features live R&B bands. However, tables are too close together and service can be indifferent.

  • At this restored 1914 Craftsman-style bungalow, choose either the Elliot or the Easton room, both furnished with period antiques. The walls are lined with thousands of volumes.

  • The room is a living legend, the feast amazing.
