San Diego

Blessed by a sunny climate that never varies ten degrees from moderate and a splendid setting along the Pacific Ocean, San Diegans can well boast they live the California Dream. Although non-stop outdoor recreation, a vibrant downtown, and world-class attractions keep the city’s spirit young, its heart lies in its Spanish beginnings as the birthplace of California.

  • Flowing water and electric lights were a technological breakthrough in 1909. Bronze plaques honor city notables.

  • You can watch or take part in inflating a brilliantly colored balloon. Hop in the basket and begin to float over the valleys and hills with a glass of champagne in hand. Flights leave early in the morning or at sunset. Most hot-air balloon companies have moved recently to Temecula where there are fewer housing developments to impede their landings.

  • Hotel del Coronado

Built in 1888, this classic beachfront respite has long been heralded as one of America’s most beautiful beach resorts. A pronouncement underscored by its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1977. The tide pool activity beachfront is an education in its self.

Its 28 beautiful oceanfront acres also houses a spa, two full service restaurants (1500 OCEAN or the Sheerwater) and a handful of quaint shops! However, my personal favorite Hotel Del Coronado activity is a new approach to San Diego Wine Tasting at the ENO Wine bar. Every Tuesday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for only $10.00, ENO sommeliers offer guests the opportunity to sample 10 wines. Yummy and fun.

  • Hotel del Coronado

Designed by James and Merritt Reid in 1887, this hotel was once the largest in the US to be built entirely of wood. Advanced for its time, the hotel had running bathroom water, telephones, and a birdcage elevator (see Hotel del Coronado).

  • This National Historic Landmark re-creates a bygone golden age. Suites in the original Victorian building have balconies that face a lovely white-sand beach. Restaurants, boutiques, and swimming pools add to the aristocratic character.

  • The Mediterranean meets Feng Shui design in this boutique hotel. The rooms are tranquil and minimalist, yet hip. Try one of the 40 in-room spa treatments and then roll into Egyptian cotton sheets and a goose down duvet.

  • Enjoy a variety of live music nightly at this waterfront lounge with an unbeatable view of the bay. Come early for a terrific happy hour.

  • From May to October, well-known performers of jazz, rock, comedy, blues, folk, and world music perform in an outdoor 1,350-seat amphitheater next to San Diego Bay. Special packages to Humphrey’s Restaurant and Humphrey’s Half Moon Bay Inn are available to patrons (see Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn & Suites).

  • Its summer concert series (see Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay), tropical landscaping, private marina, and long list of activities make this hotel an entertaining choice. Pay a little a more to get a room with a view of the bay.

  • Post-Modern architect Michael Graves designed this Italian-style palace hotel. A large fitness spa and highly acclaimed restaurants are next door. Business travelers appreciate the business center.
