San Diego

Blessed by a sunny climate that never varies ten degrees from moderate and a splendid setting along the Pacific Ocean, San Diegans can well boast they live the California Dream. Although non-stop outdoor recreation, a vibrant downtown, and world-class attractions keep the city’s spirit young, its heart lies in its Spanish beginnings as the birthplace of California.

  • Junípero Serra Museum

Constructed in 1929 in keeping with the city’s Spanish-Colonial heritage, white stucco arches, narrow passages, a red-tile roof, and a stately tower pay tribute to the first mission, which stood near this site. The San Diego Historical Society oversees the museum, which is dedicated to the city’s earliest days. Artifacts from ongoing archeological excavations at the presidio, ceramics made by Kumeyaay Indians, clothing, furniture, and a cannon help illustrate the meager life people led. Climb the tower to compare today’s view with that of 1929.

  • Famous for the Tom Cruise bar scene in Top Gun , come for the barbeque sauce dripping over ribs and burgers.

  • Try the outstanding burgers, blackened salmon, or baby back ribs. House brews Windansea Wheat, Black’s Beach Extra Dark, and Red Trolley Ale celebrate the local spirit.

  • Named in honor of the mother of Balboa Park (see The Mother of Balboa Park), this peaceful spot, with a terrific view of Mission Bay (see Mission Bay Beaches), is a popular picnicking area. Take advantage of the ocean breezes to rediscover kite flying. Walking trails extend 2 miles (3 km) through a canyon lined with native coastal sage.

  • The vintage 1888 Queen Anne home and adjoining 1905 cottage have been restored to Victorian perfection. Ask the hosts about the benevolent ghost that haunts the inn.

  • The kelp forests off San Diego’s coast provide valuable resources for Kelco, the largest kelp harvester in California. The company produces 70 different products from kelp, including stabilizers used in everything from salad dressing and ice cream to beer and car wax.

  • If you like to experiment with wild combinations of ethnic flavors, you’ll have fun here. It’s the Far East meets the American Southwest.

  • A gay country-western dance bar.

  • Specializing in “things that glitter,” you’ll find clothes with lots of sparkles for the rodeo, salsa dancing, or that upcoming pageant. For everyday wear, go for the embellished denim and leather.

  • Join the line for blueberry pancakes and breakfast burritos.
