Blessed by a sunny climate that never varies ten degrees from moderate and a splendid setting along the Pacific Ocean, San Diegans can well boast they live the California Dream. Although non-stop outdoor recreation, a vibrant downtown, and world-class attractions keep the city’s spirit young, its heart lies in its Spanish beginnings as the birthplace of California.

Holding an almost cult-like status among shopping fanatics, “Nordies” remains as popular as ever for its vast clothing selection and impressive shoe department. Belying the plush surroundings and live pianist who serenades shoppers with classical selections and show tunes, this department store can be quite affordable. Of course, there is always the personal shopper who will help you out in the designer section.

The laid-back atmosphere of Ocean Beach (see Ocean Beach) attracts locals and some out-of-towners. Surfers usually go out around the pier, and swimmers farther down the beach. There tends to be a strong rip current at the beach, so don’t swim out of sight from a lifeguard station. There are plenty of facilities, including showers, picnic tables, and volleyball courts.

Unconventional and laid back, OB, as it’s locally known, still has a somewhat hippie-like feel from the 1970s. On Newport Avenue, its main thoroughfare, you can still find a few original head shops. But OB is mainly about the beach: on any day of the year, surfers are next to the pier waiting for the next swell; volleyball players are spiking balls over the net; and dogs and their owners are running freely on Dog Beach (see Dog Beach).

Passports and/or air tickets are required for check in. Teachers and out-of-county residents who hold hostel membership cards may also stay. They offer free breakfast and barbeque-evenings, a kitchen, videos, and free lockers and airport transport.

Restaurants are within walking distance of this contemporary inn, and the boardwalk action is just outside the door. Quiet rooms with the best views are on the 3rd floor. All rooms feature a balcony or patio.

Town fortunes are tied inevitably with adjoining Camp Pendleton. The California Surf Museum presents a history of the sport.

Surrounded by water on three sides, large, breezy rooms have lovely views. Suites are great value with a balcony, kitchen, and fireplace. During summer, a boat ferries guests to a miles-long beach.
