San Diego

Blessed by a sunny climate that never varies ten degrees from moderate and a splendid setting along the Pacific Ocean, San Diegans can well boast they live the California Dream. Although non-stop outdoor recreation, a vibrant downtown, and world-class attractions keep the city’s spirit young, its heart lies in its Spanish beginnings as the birthplace of California.

  • Crafts from around Latin America include carved Peruvian gourds, textiles, Mexican folk art, and three-legged Chilean good luck pigs. There is also a wide assortment of Native American crafts such as silver jewelry (see San Diego Museum of Man).

  • Petco Park hosts the National League Padres’ baseball team.

  • Attend polo matches on Sundays.

  • Take the San Diego Trolley out to Qualcomm Stadium.

  • Many people prefer the Wild Animal Park to its sister zoo in Balboa Park (see San Diego Zoo). By mono-rail or a circuitous hiking trail, experience African and Asian animals roaming freely in enormous enclosures that replicate their natural environment. For the ultimate close-up encounter, reserve a spot on the photo caravan where an open-air truck takes you into the animal habitats. A successful breeding program has brought 125 cheetahs, 142 rhinos, and nearly extinct California condors and Arabian oryxes into the world.

  • San Diego Zoo

Fantastic Zoo with an amazing rane of animals that all look extremely well cared for.

  • At the renowned San Diego Zoo, kids shriek in delight over the latest creepy-crawly in Bugtown, and build crafts at the animal-themed events. During seasonal holidays and summer, Dr. Zoolittle presents his entertaining science shows. The zoo also offers summer camps and art classes (see San Diego Zoo).

  • San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park

On December 6, 1846, an army of volunteer Mexican-Californian ranchers, known as Californios, defeated the invading American army of dragoons in one of the bloodiest battles of the Mexican-American War. Though the Californios won the battle, they subsequently lost the war, and California became part of the US.

  • John Wayne raced up a hill at Camp Pendleton, the setting for the World War II battle.

  • Children used to swim at this sheltered cove, but harbor seals and sea lions had much the same idea. The beach is now closed, and children must view the entertaining crowds of marine animals swimming and sleeping from behind a rope.
