San Diego

Blessed by a sunny climate that never varies ten degrees from moderate and a splendid setting along the Pacific Ocean, San Diegans can well boast they live the California Dream. Although non-stop outdoor recreation, a vibrant downtown, and world-class attractions keep the city’s spirit young, its heart lies in its Spanish beginnings as the birthplace of California.

  • The Cheese Shop

Lines are long when locals come here for monster-sized custom sandwiches. Roast pork loin and roast beef are specialties, along with a wide selection of cheese.

  • This European-style B&B offers individually decorated rooms with selected antiques and lacy comforters. A full kitchen is available to guests, and a daily Continental breakfast.

  • Enjoy the freshly-baked cinnamon rolls and Belgian waffles (see The Cottage).

  • This city hideaway surrounded by a herb garden has two rooms with king-size beds and private entrances. The “Cottage” is furnished with unique Victorian antiques such as a wood burning stove; the “Garden Room” is in the owners’ home.

  • Literally imported from Ireland, the wood walls, flooring, decorations, and assorted curios were shipped over and reassembled. Even the bartenders and waitresses are the real thing, not to mention the Guinness. Grab a sidewalk seat on Fifth Avenue or try for a window seat upstairs. The pub food is great, too.

  • Take your pick from the “catch of the day” board and settle in at the oyster and sushi bar to await your table. Try for a coveted one on the outside deck directly over the water. You can request your fish be prepared grilled, fried, or Cajun style. A popular display counter offers fish to go.

  • In spring, large areas of hillside explode with brilliant-colored blossoms of the giant tecolote ranunculus. The ranch harvests 6-8 million bulbs for export.

  • La Jolla’s first hotel was designed by Richard Requa (see San Diego County Administration Center). The 1913 building houses luxury suites, while a 1926 building contains the main hotel. Elegantly appointed rooms are in keeping with the hotel’s European ambience.
