  • Juried art shows showcase the work of local artists, whose works often go on sale after being exhibited. This small shop features glass sculptures, porcelain objets d’art , hand-painted cushions, and jewelry.

  • Chinese calligraphy sets, snuff bottles, tea sets, and chops – a type of carved stamp traditionally used to sign one’s name – are on sale here (see San Diego Chinese Historical Museum).

  • San Diego Chinese Historical Museum

Artifacts such as ceramics, bone toothbrushes, and old photographs document a fascinating slice of San Diego’s history in this Spanish-style building that once served as a Chinese mission. Of special note is the ornate bed that once belonged to a Chinese warlord. In the back garden, a gate leads to a small waterfall and koi pond.

  • If you’re interested in the history of San Diego, including haunted locations and biographies of various characters, this museum offers one of the best collections of local history books (see San Diego Historical Society Museum).

  • San Diego Maritime Museum

This museum pays tribute to the men and ships that so influenced the history and life of San Diego. Fascinating permanent and temporary exhibitions educate and entertain, while anchored ships can be boarded and explored.

  • Merchandise reflects special exhibits. Wonderful art books, children’s books, jewelry, purses, flower pressing kits, and Tibetan chests are for sale. A garden shop sells garden ornaments and bonsai kits (see San Diego Museum of Art).

  • Crafts from around Latin America include carved Peruvian gourds, textiles, Mexican folk art, and three-legged Chilean good luck pigs. There is also a wide assortment of Native American crafts such as silver jewelry (see San Diego Museum of Man).

  • Spanish Village Art Center

In a Spanish village-like atmosphere (see Spanish Village Art Center), adobe houses from the 1935–36 California-Pacific Exposition have been transformed into delightful artists’ studios, where you can shop or even take a lesson from the artists.

  • This gallery presents international contemporary artists. Discover the colorful works of Gaudi-influenced artist Niki de Saint Phalle, the pen-and-ink drawings of Mexico’s José Luis Cuevas, the bronze sculptures of Britain’s Lynn Chadwick, and the surrealist paintings of Chilean Roberto Matta.

  • Old photo reprints from Earp’s Dodge City and Tombstone gunfighter days and a number of biographies tell the story of Stingaree’s most infamous resident.
