1. Hotel del Coronado
This National Historic Landmark re-creates a bygone golden age. Suites in the original Victorian building have balconies that face a lovely white-sand beach. Restaurants, boutiques, and swimming pools add to the aristocratic character.

2. La Valencia
Since 1926, the “Pink Lady of La Jolla” has enchanted with its splendid Mediterranean ambience, exquisite decor, and ideal location on the cliffs above La Jolla Cove. Rooms vary from quite small to large ocean villas.

3. Horton Grand Hotel
Rebuilt from two Victorian-era hotels, this hotel reflects the character of the Gaslamp Quarter. Rooms are individually decorated in period style and each has a gas fireplace.

Ulysses S. Grant Jr. commissioned this stately 1910 Renaissance palace. A $10 million-dollar renovation has restored its past glory, with mahogany furniture and paneling, tile floors, and luxurious rooms.

Now on the National Register of Historic Places, much of the 1913 craftsmanship of this building remains, such as Australian gumwood, Corinthian marble, and an elevator door made of brass. Complimentary breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace.

6. Glorietta Bay Inn
Many of the original fixtures of John D. Spreckels’ (see Silver Strand State Beach) 1908 Edwardian mansion remain, including hand-made plaster moldings, chandeliers, and a marble staircase. Splurge on one of the antique-filled guest rooms inside the house.

7. The Grande Colonial
La Jolla’s first hotel was designed by Richard Requa (see San Diego County Administration Center). The 1913 building houses luxury suites, while a 1926 building contains the main hotel. Elegantly appointed rooms are in keeping with the hotel’s European ambience.

This B&B is housed in Spanish-Colonial style buildings constructed in 1915. The Orient Express room features a Chinese rosewood bed, and the Tara Suite pays tribute to Gone With the Wind .
