Top 10 Nightlife
-
1. The Bitter End
Three floors cater to singles on the move. Upstairs, a replica of a Michelangelo ceiling fresco oversees marble fireplaces, tapestries, and a library. On the ground level, a long mahogany bar serves martinis and drinks of choice, while the downstairs club jams to techno, hip-hop, and retro sounds.
-
2. Onyx Room
At this chic basement club, order the cocktail of the month and settle back to live jazz on Tuesdays. Upstairs is the Onyx’s sister bar Thin, where the “engineered” drinks and atmosphere are the epitome of urban cool.
-
3. Sevilla
This restaurant-nightclub offers everything Latin. Tango and Flamenco dinner shows spotlight the Spanish restaurant, while instructors teach salsa and samba downstairs. You can practice your moves to the live bands that perform afterwards. The basement becomes a Latin/ Euro dance club on Friday and Saturday nights.
-
4. Croce’s Jazz Bar & Croce’s Top Hat
Ingrid Croce opened Gaslamp’s first club in tribute to her late husband, singer/songwriter Jim Croce, in 1985. The Jazz Bar features traditional, contemporary, and Latin live jazz, while the Top Hat features live R&B bands. However, tables are too close together and service can be indifferent.
-
5. Martini Ranch
You’ll find a martini to your taste among the 50 available. Head to the leopard-print loveseats upstairs or enjoy the hip-hop in the adjacent Shaker Room. There’s happy hour every weekday from 4–7pm, and on Fridays, “Manicures, Martinis & More” presents fashion, manicures, and drinks for the ladies.
-
6. Dizzy’s
It’s all about the music at this sparse 1913 warehouse just east of the Gaslamp Quarter. No food or alcohol are available, and no TV or neon lights distract from the live jazz bands. All ages are welcome.
-
7. Casbah
Underground alternative rock rules at this dark and grungy club. Famous and future bands turn up the decibels every night of the week. Past headliners have included Alanis Morissette, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana.
-
8. Cane’s
Restaurant by day, happy-hour bar by sunset, and mainstream punk club by night, everyone from Mission Beach’s boardwalk packs in and spills onto the rooftop patio overlooking the ocean for a good time.
-
9. Humphrey’s Backstage Lounge
Enjoy a variety of live music nightly at this waterfront lounge with an unbeatable view of the bay. Come early for a terrific happy hour.
-
10. Comedy Store
Headliners from LA’s famous Comedy Club often perform at their San Diego branch. David Letterman, Garry Shandling, and Pauly Shore have all had a go here, as well as the local talent. Sundays are open mike nights.
