San Francisco

San Franciscans will, rather candidly, admit that they are the most fortunate people on earth, the occasional earthquake notwithstanding; and most visitors, after a few days of taking in the sights and sounds of this magnificent city, will agree. Ask anyone who has been here and they will tell you it’s their favorite US city. The geographical setting evokes so much emotional drama, the light seems clearer, the colors more vivid, the cultural diversity of the ethnic neighborhoods so captivating and inviting, that it’s a place almost everyone can fall in love with at first sight.

  • A brisk business in drinks, pastries, soups, and salads. Always crowded.

  • Very popular with 20-something couples for intimate chats.

  • You’re as likely to hear Italian here as you are English, not only from the staff but from the patrons. A friendly atmosphere in which to enjoy an espresso and eye passers-by.

  • Caffè Trieste

A North Beach landmark that must be experienced if you have any interest whatsoever in this quarter’s colorful history – either from the literary and artistic or the Italian points of view. It’s a really great place for a cup of whatever warm liquid you favor, and to just sit and people-watch or dip into one of the city’s free weekly papers.

  • If you’re in the quarter on a Saturday afternoon, don’t miss the impromptu opera that takes place here. But any time is right for this artists’ and writers’ gathering place.

  • One of the most authentic cafés in town, rich with arty nonchalance.

  • A relaxing hangout for people to read, converse and work on their laptops over cappuccino.

  • California Academy of Sciences

From 2004–8 the site of this museum at Golden Gate Park is to be renovated and the collection relocated to a temporary home. This extensive science museum covers virtually every aspect of the natural world.

  • The largest collection of decorative work, including murals and furniture, by California Arts and Crafts practitioners Arthur and Lucia Kleinhaus Mathews.

  • On the first level the Hall of Ecology features “A Walk Across California,” including a diorama of a Sacramento delta marsh showing fish, bird, and insect life, and another of a mountain lion and its prey, demonstrating nature’s food chain.
