  • Critics abound who are ready to dismiss this parabolic form, but the soaring curves take the attention upward, in much the same fashion that tracery and peaked vaulting do in Gothic cathedrals (see Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption).

  • Constructed in 1872, this Gothic Revival cathedral stands as one of South of Market’s landmarks. The marble and stained-glass interior is impressive.

  • Sts. Peter & Paul Church

North Beach’s landmark “Italian Church” was once dubbed the “Marzipan Church” for the frothy stucco decoration on its soaring pinnacles. Inside, there is a sculpted reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper (see Saints Peter & Paul Church).

  • Founded in 1849 by Jewish pioneers, the present domed synagogue dates from 1904.

  • Hindu clothing, arts, and crafts.

  • The Queen of Heaven rules this sanctuary and makes sure devotees travel safely by water, among other things (see Chinatown).

  • Transamerica Pyramid

Hated by many at first, the Pyramid is now loved as an icon of the city. Recalling pyramids of ancient cultures, to some it is a symbol of the mysticism that has always played a part in the San Francisco mentality. At 853 ft (260 m), it is the tallest building in the city, but its shape keeps it from casting a shadow on the neighborhood.

  • This was the first Hindu Temple (1905) in the western US.

  • The work of seven women painters graces the façade.

  • Home to the city’s Zen practitioners. Beginners are welcome.
