  • Make-Out Room

Cool live music provided by local up-and-comers and DJ nights make this a Mission favorite. The decor is original, the drinks are cheap, and the staff is appropriately witty.

  • With its decor of glass and chrome and the regulars’ penchant for singing old torch songs, this is a very retro piano bar for an older gay crowd. It’s a magnet for butch guys, drag queens, and straights, too – anyone who likes a good sing-along – or who likes to get up at the mike and embarrass himself.

  • Mecca

This dolled-up industrial space attracts some of the Castro’s prettiest men, including the occasional drag queen, around the glowing circular bar, with red velvet and chiffon drapery. It’s also a supper club featuring New American cuisine.

  • This bright Potrero Hill hall is all about dancing – dancing lessons, to be precise. Come to master the steps of the cha-cha-cha, the foxtrot, the Lindy hop, salsa, the tango, the waltz, the merengue, even break-dancing.

  • The top local brand comes from, and takes its name from Calistoga in the Napa Valley.

  • Moby Dick

This old-time Castro hangout attracts a more mature crowd. It’s generally a bunch of regulars getting together for pinball or pool – or gazing at the aquarium over the bar. The windows are big, so you can keep track of what’s going down on the street. The music is largely 1980s retro that sets a fun-loving tone.

  • Quirky and popular with local artists, the jukebox is filled only with tunes by local talent, and events tend toward things like magic tricks.

  • Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Zinfandel are giving Cabernet Sauvignon some healthy competition of late.

  • Sauvignon Blanc, White Zinfandel, Chenin Blanc, and Pinot Grigio are whites that can tempt you away from the Chardonnay grape.

  • The bar dates from 1825 and was imported from Ireland. Everything else here evokes the Emerald Isle, as well.
