  • Handsome Queen Anne and Tudor Revival homes constitute this charming B&B, restored with impeccable taste. Both overlook the famous square with its even more famous view. A complimentary American breakfast is served in the sunny (fog permitting) conservatory. Smoking is allowed on the back patio only. Free off-street parking.

  • The nine rooms here are all cozily decorated and have names such as The Cabrillo Room and the Sir Francis Suite. Janis Joplin used to stay in the Joplin Room, which has its own sundeck.

  • This old-fashioned hotel has sweeping views of the Bay and of the city. Many rooms benefit from balconies.

  • This restored Victorian is located in San Francisco’s oldest and most colorful district, fast becoming one of the hippest neighborhoods. Breakfast served in the dining room.

  • Built for San Francisco’s archbishop in 1904, this converted wonder is a slice of city history, and has the Alamo Square views that appear on postcards. Free breakfast and evening wine and cheese make it a real treat. Be aware, however, that the neighborhood is rundown.

  • This standard 1960s motel is handy for the Castro, the Lower Haight, and the Mission. It’s one of those no-frills, what-you-see-is-what-you-get places, simple and very serviceable, and quiet, given its prime location. Free parking is a plus, and cable TV, too.

  • All homes participating in the service have been carefully selected. Private residences in every desirable part of San Francisco are listed, including Pacific Heights and the Marina.

  • Rooms feature shutters, French tapestries, and wrought-iron pieces. Most rooms include a fireplace, and two of the rooms also have Jacuzzis.

  • A member of the Leading Small Hotels of the World and definitely one of San Francisco’s finest, this place aims to provide personal attention to every guest. Expect to find the best of everything. Its restaurant also has national ranking.

  • This restored 1890s Italianate Victorian has views of Downtown and the Bay. Accommodations are a mixture of contemporary furniture, original art, and plants. The kitchen is equipped with dishwasher, clothes washer, and microwave.
