  • 1. White Swan Inn

This quaint B&B is like a country inn in the heart of Downtown with bright floral prints and Victorian-style canopied beds. Champagne in the late afternoon and a great English breakfast are complimentary.

  • 2. The Union Street Inn

Combining the elegance and gentility of an Edwardian home, just up from the Marina and right on fashionable Union Street. The individually decorated rooms are all spacious, with original antiques and art, fine linens, and complimentary chocolates, fresh flowers, and fruit.

  • 3. Archbishop’s Mansion

Built for San Francisco’s archbishop in 1904, this converted wonder is a slice of city history, and has the Alamo Square views that appear on postcards. Free breakfast and evening wine and cheese make it a real treat. Be aware, however, that the neighborhood is rundown.

  • 4. The Red Victorian

Inspired along hippie ideals, you meet the owners and other guests and engage in intelligent conversation around the breakfast table. Each guestroom is also designed to celebrate an aspect of world love.

  • 5. Inn 1890

Located in Haight Ashbury, this Queen Annestyle building dates back to 1890. This cozy hotel has hardwood floors, bay windows, and fireplaces. The spacious guest rooms have brass or iron queensized beds with oversized comforters, bathrobes, and slippers.

  • 6. Alamo Square Inn

Handsome Queen Anne and Tudor Revival homes constitute this charming B&B, restored with impeccable taste. Both overlook the famous square with its even more famous view. A complimentary American breakfast is served in the sunny (fog permitting) conservatory. Smoking is allowed on the back patio only. Free off-street parking.

  • 7. Albion House Inn

The nine rooms here are all cozily decorated and have names such as The Cabrillo Room and the Sir Francis Suite. Janis Joplin used to stay in the Joplin Room, which has its own sundeck.

  • 8. Panama Hotel

A friendly, eccentric place, filled with period eclectic touches. Rooms have names such as the Bordello Room, and Friend’s of Dorothy – each with its own tale to tell.

  • 9. The Pelican Inn

Majestically positioned deep in a valley, each of the seven rooms has antiques, and a roaring fire is lit every day in the inglenook fireplace.

  • 10. Cliff Crest B&B Inn

Surrounded by redwoods, the rooms in this Queen Anne Victorian are graced with fresh flowers, and some have views of the Bay.
