Scotland

Scotland has an overwhelming abundance of natural beauty, hundreds of castles stand proud from its long and turbulent past, and an innate flair for enterprise and travel has endowed the nation with artistic treasures from around the world. The culture remains vibrant today, and there’s much to celebrate. Here’s a distillation of Scotland’s best.

  • Despite its name, it’s well down the coast from Glasgow and is considered one of the finest sea-edge courses. Great open vistas and fairways lined with heather add to its challenging holes. Western Gailes runs alongside and shares all the qualities of its more famous neighbour.

  • Big and modern, the Hilton has Glasgow’s fullest range of facilities, including gym, pool, beauty salon, business utilities, baby-sitting and two good restaurants. Superbly appointed rooms, some with cityscape views.

  • A jamboree that swamps the city with devotees of jazz and supplies top international musicians. Venues range from theatres to pubs, clubs and ad hoc stages.

  • Still a working college, this is Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s most famous building.

  • Housed in a landmark building, three entire floors of hands-on experiments, which puzzle, delight and demonstrate that science is miraculous. There’s an IMAX screen with 3D films, too, and the world’s first revolving tower (see Glasgow Science Centre) .

  • Glasgow’s newest major museum, and a spellbinding array of interactive exhibits, visual enthralment and stimulation aplenty for minds young and old alike. Impossible not to be wowed (see Glasgow Science Centre) .

  • Glen of outstanding beauty, most easily accessed from the east at Cannich. But at the western end, near Morvich, there’s a walk to the breathtaking Falls of Glomach (see Glen Affric) .

  • A knife-cut glen of wild scenery. Drive to the end for the best walks, or plan a long trek to Lochnagar and Loch Muick – tough hiking, but sensational.

  • Situated at the end of a lovely glen is this hotel and restaurant. A simple all-day menu provides such staples as haddock, venison and homemade pies, while slightly more elaborate dishes are served for dinner.

  • Recently refurbished and plumped up with feathers, this excellent old hotel offers character and relaxation in the best of central Scotland’s scenery. From a bunkhouse to a four-poster bed, and bar snacks to cordon bleu, this place offers beds and food for all needs.
