  • Could there be a hostel grander than this? Once home for the exiled King of Norway, the castle was built as a Romantic folly in 1914, with ballroom, library, marble fireplaces and a staircase of epic proportions. The art may not be the best but it looks the part, and sometimes there are more statues than guests.

  • The only distillery to have been pioneered by a woman and, aside from producing a distinguished single malt, it provides the heart of the Johnnie Walker blend. This is one of the smaller distilleries and charming for it.

  • Impressive causeways built in World War II by Italian prisoners of war, who were also responsible for the exquisite chapel.

  • An internationally famous venue for performances of classics. Two modern studios complement the old Victorian auditorium.

  • A delicate tower house with the grace and detail of porcelain. Scottish Baronial style at its best, and with some lovely monkey-puzzle trees in the grounds (see Craigievar Castle) .

  • Another exemplary 16th-century tower house, with original features in the Great Hall. Wonderful topiary in the ancient yew hedge.

  • A thrilling collection of precious stones, crystals, minerals and fossils in a gem of a village.

  • Take a stroll along this scenic 9-mile (16-km) canal, completed in 1801 and now used by yachts and fishing boats. The best places to see them are at Ardrishaig, Cairnbaan or Crinan.

  • Amid blazing furnaces, watch molten glass turn into crystal – good place to pick up a bargain.

  • Dallas Dhu Distillery

When this working distillery closed it was preserved as a time capsule of whisky-making from 1898 to 1980. Beautifully done, and with a traditional free dram!
