  • Like its rival Laphroaig , this is a very distinctive malt. It is made in a traditional distillery with unusual pear-shaped stills. A highly personal tour without that feeling of mass-market hustle.

  • Lairg

The annual event here is the one-day sheep sale – the biggest in the country with up to 40,000 sheep.

  • With their heavy smoked-peat flavour, the Islay malts really are in a class of their own. Even if you think you won’t like them, try them! This malt is pronounced “lafroyg”, but in truth your pronunciation doesn’t matter – the taste is famous enough for instant recognition. A delightfully informal and intimate tour with plenty of wit and grist at a fine sea-edge location.

  • Situated in splendid scenery, this once important church island is now a quiet holiday retreat. Very green and fertile, it’s name is said to mean “great garden”.

  • As it is not famous for anything except its defunct slate quarry, you should have this isle to yourself. Pretty, and easy to tour by bicycle.

  • M & D’s Scotland’s Theme Park

A massive adventure park with all the jaw-clenching thrills of the fairground. Rides to suit all ages and nerves (see M&D’s Scotland’s Theme Park) .

  • Another of the famous Speyside brands, and one of the most modern visitor centres in the valley. Aside from a guided tour, you explore whisky-making using the latest interactive technology. For a modest sum you can become a connoisseur by prearranging an individually tutored nosing and tasting session.

  • The swansong of the great classical house, this family home stands in sumptuous gardens and has the only silver staircase in the world.

  • Internationally-important tidal basin and mecca for seafowl and waders. In autumn 35,000 pink-footed geese stop here to refuel during their southward migration.

  • This is the only known resident population (they number around 130) of bottlenose dolphins in the North Sea.
