  • Where your home is your castle. Scotland’s most magnificent hostel and one that should not be missed (see Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel) .

  • This fine old stone house, with flower park and museum nearby, is centrally located, close to shops and restaurants. Ideal accommodation anytime, but especially good for the Up Helly Aa festival.

  • Wonderfully peaceful setting, away from the hubbub. Décor reflects the Edwardian architecture, while the in-room facilities are up to the minute, with internet access, DVD players and e-TV. Luxurious bathrooms, with Molton Brown toiletries.

  • If you’re into surfing or kayaking, this is the place. But even if you’re not, the views across sand and surf are truly exhila- rating, and there’s plenty of good walking. Plain hostel in a red stone building – but what a setting!

  • Overnight or weekly accommodation in a historic college adjoining Britain’s smallest cathedral, the Cathedral of the Isles. Full and half board available, depending on the current programme. A timeless and deeply spiritual place to rest mind and body.

  • The Aitkens have turned this 19th-century shooting lodge into a lovely guesthouse, set in peaceful countryside outside the village of Dervaig. Panoramic views of Loch Cuin and Ben More, and good home cooking for an evening meal.

  • Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here (he commandeered the place in 1746) and the hosts have dined out on the story ever since. Glistening chandeliers and Adams plasterwork enhance a building of exceptional architecture. Every room uniquely decorated, and superb dining.

  • An excellent choice if you’re staying for more than a few nights. Luxurious apartments, elegant modern styling and full maid service. Various West End locations near to Kelvingrove Park. One and two beds available.

  • This imposing farmhouse with a stately round tower overlooks the sea and is gazed upon by shaggy Highland cattle. A fine B&B that welcomes all, except smokers and pets.

  • In a tranquil location overlooking the Tummel valley, this small country house has just three bedrooms. Voted into the top 20 B&Bs for the whole of Britain, Easter Dunfallandy is inexpensive rural living, where the day begins with a hearty Highland breakfast. No children under 12 are allowed, no dogs and no risk of disturbance to the tranquillity.
