  • Are these details incorrect?
  • 1. Eas A’Chual Aluinn Fall, nr Kylesku

Britain’s highest waterfall drops 200 m (650 ft) at the end of Loch Glencoul.

  • 2. RSPB Forsinard Peatlands Reserve

The great peatland here, known as the Flow Country, offers walks among rare plants, insects and birds.

  • 3. Smoo Cave, Durness

Remarkable natural cavern beside the sea. You can walk in a little way, but a floodlit boat tour is best.

  • 4. Swanson Art Gallery, Thurso

Hosting touring exhibitions of surprising quality, the Swanson has a widely varying programme.

  • 5. Scapa Flow Visitor Centre, Hoy, Orkney

An exploration of the bay of Scapa Flow, where, in 1917, the captive German Navy scuttled 74 ships.

  • 6. Churchill Barriers and Italian Chapel, Orkney

Impressive causeways built in World War II by Italian prisoners of war, who were also responsible for the exquisite chapel.

  • 7. Stromness, Orkney

A town of flagstoned streets and a museum that draws on the Orcadian connection with the Hudson Bay Shipping Company.

  • 8. Balfour Castle, Orkney

Stay here if you can, but if not at least visit. Guided tours of this delightful home are possible during the summer. Not daily, so phone ahead (see Balfour Castle, Orkney) .

  • 9. Ring of Brodgar, Orkney

A marvellously atmospheric prehistoric site of 36 slabs raised to form a circle. There are taller (but fewer) standing stones nearby at Stenness.

  • 10. Fair Isle, Shetland

Famous for knitted patterns and as a haven of traditional crafts, this remote island has awesome cliff scenery and birdlife. The ferry is weather-dependent, so be prepared for a wait.
