Scotland

Scotland has an overwhelming abundance of natural beauty, hundreds of castles stand proud from its long and turbulent past, and an innate flair for enterprise and travel has endowed the nation with artistic treasures from around the world. The culture remains vibrant today, and there’s much to celebrate. Here’s a distillation of Scotland’s best.

  • The Golden Larches

Open from March to October this is a gorgeous little family restaurant. The food is home cooked and delicious. Fish Tea is a definate winner (you don't have to take fish!!). The family who run it are the most helpful accomodating people around.

  • Pub on the high street in Fort William. Warm atmosphere, good food and drink and pretty barmaids! Good stop for tired walkers.

  • Hidden up a close in Edinburgh's imposing Old Town, just off the Royal Mile, the Jolly Judge provides a cosy nook to partake a whisky mac on a cold winters afternoon an da courtyard to enjoy al fresco drinks in summer

  • If you want a base from which to explore Edinburgh but don't want to eat out every night, have laundry facilities and home comforts in a luxurous apartment look no further than here

  • Glasgow is great for a bit of retail therapy and all roads lead to Buchanan Street - the main shopping hub, however where do you go to get away from the crowds for a drink or bite to eat so you can relax and recharge your batteries before some more shopping? Hidden down a lane off Buchanan Street next to Office Shoes is The Lab a small and cosy bar with a beer garden. The Lab has a fab lunch menu and an extensive bar including some local brews as well.

Thoroughly recommended and completely hidden a real find and only steps away from all the shops!

  • the Munroes

it is very easy to get to the beautiful Scottish countryside from Glasgow and climb a few Munroes

  • Family run restaurant serving Scottish shellfish (best mussels I've ever eaten!), "catch of the day" and farm assured Scottish beef. Lunchtime menu excellent value. Reservations recommended for evening dining.

  • The Pineapple

Concealed behind a tall, weathered old wall and surrounded by woodland, not far from the Scottish village of Ainth, stands a fantastic architectural prank. A wrought-iron gate opens onto a straight driveway that leads through some well-groomed parkland. In the middle of the park, enthroned amid symmetrically arranged trees, sits a fruity extravaganza in stone: an enormous pineapple.

The stone-carved, aristocratic whim that is the Pineapple can be rented as a holiday home. The entrance is to the rear of the building and the rooms are situated in the elongated pavilions beneath the Pineapple, in the one-time gardener’s quarters. On one side of the Pineapple are two bedrooms and a bathroom, on the other the kitchen and a spacious lounge.

Everything is tastefully furnished with antiques. There is a pile of wood stacked at the ready for the open fire in the lounge and, to set the right mood, historical prints showing hunting scenes adorn the walls.

In the middle of the two wings is the spectacular summerhouse, the Pineapple itself. Inside, it is light and unpretentious. A set of garden furniture is supplied: deckchairs, wicker chairs and a table. It’s the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon drinking tea and enjoying the view of the park.

  • This is a charming, friendly hotel with bed and breakfast provided, situated near Holyrood Park and right near a main bus stop into city centre. It is an old Georgian building with high ceilings and lovely decor. The owners are extremely helpful with advice about sights, buses, and local shops, and the breakfast is plentiful. A beautiful, quality hotel yet still within a typical traveler's budget.

  • One of the World's Best backpacking routes; a promenade over lush gresses at around 2000ft. over twenty miles giving constant views of dramatic clifftop, highland wildlife and a continuous vista over the whole north-west of Scotland.
