If you want to be flexible about where and when to eat, then shop at Valvona & Crolla or Iain Mellis ; the day before your trip, and make a gourmet picnic – as lavish as you like.
The next morning, set off at 9am, just after rushhour, and drive to Rosslyn Chapel to see the extraordinary carvings. As wonderful as they are, this stop won’t take long. So, before being tempted to delve into the hamper, drive on to Penicuik and take the A703 to Peebles. It’s worth having a break for coffee in this pretty town.
Now take the lovely Tweedside A72 to Melrose. Visit the majestic abbey and then either lunch here at Marmions or drive on 5 miles (8 km) to Scott’s View – one of the best in the Borders – and have your picnic at last.
Afternoon
If you haven’t overdosed on the remnants of medieval monastic life, then make a brief visit to Dryburgh Abbey, the ruins and situation of which are very different to Melrose.
From Dryburgh it’s a short drive to Earlston to visit nearby Mellerstain House. Start with a cup of tea and a sugary energy boost in the restaurant, and then tour at your leisure (it closes at 5pm in summer). Leave your stroll around the gardens till last as they close later.
Return to Edinburgh, or tour further along this border landscape.
