  • 1. One Devonshire Gardens

This stretch of Victorian terrace in the West End is the epitome of timeless, sophisticated luxury. The rooms, individually styled, are awash with luxurious fabrics to excite the touch and selected antique furniture. With sumptuous bathrooms and plenty of high-tech gadgetry in the bedrooms, why step outside the front door?

  • 2. Arthouse Hotel

Extravagant (almost) to the point of kitsch, this velvet-clad, gold-trimmed hotel is in the funky Philippe Starck mould. The rooms are spacious, with big beds and pillows you could nest in.

  • 3. Glasgow Hilton

Big and modern, the Hilton has Glasgow’s fullest range of facilities, including gym, pool, beauty salon, business utilities, baby-sitting and two good restaurants. Superbly appointed rooms, some with cityscape views.

  • 4. Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor

Not quite as many amenities as the central Hilton , but a finer building (an elegant Victorian terrace) and location – in Glasgow’s leafy West End, opposite the Botanic Gardens. A traditional ambience, and bedrooms every bit as comfy as its downtown sister’s.

  • 5. St Jude’s

A small hotel with a private-club feel, its rooms (small oases of serenity in a cool, contemporary style) situated above the restaurant and wonderful bar (see St Jude’s) . St Jude may be the patron of lost souls, but this style-conscious headquarters of hedonism is no place for the downhearted.

  • 6. Malmaison

Malmaison exercises its mantra of getting the details right: large, comfortable beds, mood lighting and seriously pleasurable bathrooms, with power showers and baths suitable for hour-long soaks. French-style brasserie in the crypt (the building is a converted church) and a gym to counterbalance all the lazing about.

  • 7. Langs

Crisp, no-nonsense, well-designed rooms, kitted out with the usual gadgets – TV, DVD player and music system – but the real star is the Japanese-influenced Oshi spa, which chimes with the sushi restaurant.

  • 8. Millennium Hotel Glasgow

One of the best things about this large, recently revamped hotel is the conservatory, which sits on the edge of George Sq. Breakfast here, and watch the crowds rushing to and from the neighbouring station. Elsewhere, solid, dependable rooms and services, if a bit corporate in style.

  • 9. Dreamhouse Inc

An excellent choice if you’re staying for more than a few nights. Luxurious apartments, elegant modern styling and full maid service. Various West End locations near to Kelvingrove Park. One and two beds available.

  • 10. SACO

Twelve luxury-on-a-budget one-bedroom apartments in the heart of town. Simple, modern furnishings and fully serviced: minimum 6 nights’ stay.
