  • 1. Glenmachrie Country House, Islay

This working farm is also a wildlife sanctuary and eco-conscious zone. Alas-dair and Rachel Whyte are tending their corner of the planet, and to share their home is to experience comfort, hospitality, organic food and, of course, natural harmony. Strictly non-smoking.

  • 2. Northbay House, Barra

A sparklingly modern guesthouse, converted from a schoolhouse close to Barra’s famous beaches. Laundry facilities, packed lunches and wheelchair access, too. Non-smoking; no pets. Only two bedrooms, but self-catering also possible.

  • 3. Kirkapol Guest House, Tiree

Through lancet windows, this converted church gives views over Hawaii-like stretches of beach. A quiet repose on this beautiful island, with simple en-suite rooms and dinners available by request.

  • 4. Glen Cloy Farm Guesthouse, Arran

Lovely ivy-clad home in a peaceful glen just outside Brodick. A short distance away are the castle, golf course and paths to Goat Fell. Homemade short-bread and preserves, eggs from runabout hens and other healthy farm produce.

  • 5. College of the Holy Spirit, Isle of Cumbrae

Overnight or weekly accommodation in a historic college adjoining Britain’s smallest cathedral, the Cathedral of the Isles. Full and half board available, depending on the current programme. A timeless and deeply spiritual place to rest mind and body.

  • 6. Carradale Guest-house, Shetland

This fine old stone house, with flower park and museum nearby, is centrally located, close to shops and restaurants. Ideal accommodation anytime, but especially good for the Up Helly Aa festival.

  • 7. Marygarth Manse, Orkney

The small island of Sanday is a gem, and Mrs Flett runs a superb guesthouse here in this rambling, old, Victorian manse. She welcomes children and pets and caters for special diets. A native Orcadian upholding the islanders’ tradition of hospitality.

  • 8. Cuin Lodge, Mull

The Aitkens have turned this 19th-century shooting lodge into a lovely guesthouse, set in peaceful countryside outside the village of Dervaig. Panoramic views of Loch Cuin and Ben More, and good home cooking for an evening meal.

  • 9. Viewfield House, Skye

A rambling building that has been a family house for 200 years. Guests are made welcome and everyone dines together.

  • 10. Ardhasaig House, Isle of Harris

Set by one of the most picturesque roads in the isles, this 1904 house has been completely refurbished, while retaining certain period features. Light décor, simple furnishings, captivating views – a B&B of the highest calibre, with the option of dinner. A self-catering cottage is also available.
