Shirley and Eddie Spear have been enhancing their international reputation for 20 years in this sublime cottage restaurant (see Three Chimneys) .

  • 2. Bonaventure

Chef Richard Leparoux has chosen the remotest corner to set up his restaurant. Well worth the trek to find dazzling French-Scottish dishes in an old RAF base with picturesque surrounds.

  • 3. Port Mor House

Dinner is included with bed and breakfast here, simply because there’s nowhere else to go. Thankfully the restaurant excels itself (see Port Mor House) .

  • 4. Kilmichael Country House

Considering the hotel’s five-star rating, its restaurant is a bargain. Set four-course menus and a connoisseur’s wine list. Booking essential.

  • 5. Eilean Iarmain Hotel

Charming and cosily set in a huddle of historic buildings by the sea (with its own oyster beds). Highest quality set four-course menu (three choices for each course) and elite wine list.

  • 6. The Mishnish

Celebrated pub on Tobermory’s colourful seafront. Always bustling (and often packed) with locals and visitors. Regular live music.

  • 7. An Tuireann

Swish, modern arts exhibition centre. Part of the draw is the delicious vegetarian meals and snacks served in the café.

  • 8. Jura Hotel

Quaint old coastal hotel. In any one evening you are likely to meet most of Jura’s inhabitants. Simple food in the scenery of the gods.

  • 9. Castlebay Bar

Cheap bar meals are on offer, as well as silver service with all the trimmings in its restaurant overlooking the village bay.

  • 10. Druimard Country House Hotel

Dining room in a meticulously restored Victorian house situated just opposite Mull Theatre and overlooking the glen.
