Sicily

The island of Sicily is Italy’s largest region and is also its most varied. In terms of geography, there are offshore islands, endless coastline, rugged mountains, rolling wheatfields and volcanos, but its history and architecture are also of note. Sicily formed a significant portion of the Greek empire, was strategically vital to Rome, and was invaded in succession by the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, French, Spanish and Bourbons, before unifying with Italy. Each conquest left its mark, to create a palimpsest of cultures on the island.

  • Originally a fish dish, it was adapted by the cucina povera (kitchen of the poor) as a slow-cooked mix of aubergine (eggplant), tomato, celery, capers, olives, raisins and pine nuts, flavoured with vinegar and sugar, and topped with toasted almonds.

  • This masterpiece of Norman art celebrates both the Glory of God and successful Norman rule. Masses are said in the richly decorated chapel (see Cappella Palatina Interior).

  • Burial ground of Palermo’s upper classes (1599–1881); the niches still contain skeletons.

  • Everything is good here – try aubergines (eggplants) stuffed with mint and garlic.

  • The historic streets of these towns are packed with revellers for parades, parties and competitions. Papier mâché floats satirize current events or figures of popular culture.
