Sicily

The island of Sicily is Italy’s largest region and is also its most varied. In terms of geography, there are offshore islands, endless coastline, rugged mountains, rolling wheatfields and volcanos, but its history and architecture are also of note. Sicily formed a significant portion of the Greek empire, was strategically vital to Rome, and was invaded in succession by the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, French, Spanish and Bourbons, before unifying with Italy. Each conquest left its mark, to create a palimpsest of cultures on the island.

  • Built as a grand hotel in 1902 on Taormina’s hillside, renovations have preserved the charm of the original while modernizing the guest rooms (most of them have good views). The Belvedere is also noted for its gardens with citrus and palm trees and serves pool-side lunches.

  • Recently renovated, this 2-star hotel is an excellent bargain choice in Palermo. The 27 rooms are large and clean, the public areas are equipped with a TV, parking is available, and there is free entry to a private beach in Mondello. Near the church of San Domenico.

  • Hotel President, Marsala

  • This new hotel caters to business travellers. The 34 rooms are individually decorated. The hotel offers a gym, restaurant, parking and in-room internet access.

Each of the 10 two-level suites has a refrigerator and living room with views down to the sea, and is decorated in minimal Aeolian style with terracotta floors, whitewashed walls and bright furniture. There’s a large terrace for outdoor dining on a cliff over the sea, and beach access via a path down the hill.
