Sicily

The island of Sicily is Italy’s largest region and is also its most varied. In terms of geography, there are offshore islands, endless coastline, rugged mountains, rolling wheatfields and volcanos, but its history and architecture are also of note. Sicily formed a significant portion of the Greek empire, was strategically vital to Rome, and was invaded in succession by the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, French, Spanish and Bourbons, before unifying with Italy. Each conquest left its mark, to create a palimpsest of cultures on the island.

  • Modern rooms, a terrace, a small garden restaurant and easy access to the beach.

  • The Ursuline sisters run a hotel in a restored 19th-century palazzo on Ortygia. Some of the modern 18 rooms offer air conditioning and a sea view. Books up quickly.

  • This large modern building sits in the forest above Zafferana Etnea. Many of the furnished rooms have terraces and views of Mount Etna or the sea.

  • This small village has a 14th-century castle of the Spanish Counts of Modica, who once ruled much of the region. It is best known for Bianco d’Alcamo, a white wine with DOC protection.

  • The Alcantara River runs at the bottom of a 20-m (65-ft) deep basalt gorge. From the car park, with waders for rent, walk down the steps or take the lift to the bottom, where you can hike between the narrow walls and over waterfalls.

  • Alceste, Selinunte

Another Sole hotel, the Alceste is a reasonably priced, family-run establishment in the quiet fishing village at Selinunte. Breakfast is served on a terrace with a beautiful view overlooking the sea.

  • In this unusual grocer’s there is a wide selection of prepared foods, cheeses and vegetables, and a great choice of wines.

  • On 10 July 1943 Allied Forces under generals Patton and Montgomery landed at Gela and Pachino taking Sicily in 38 days.

  • Eastern Sicily is known for its production of these high-quality and richly flavoured nuts.

  • Since 1882 Altieri has been producing their own uniquely designed pieces in gold, coral and ceramics.
