  • The reserve’s maquis supports thyme, rosemary and juniper; the wetlands host migratory birds. Depending on the season, watch for herons, egrets and flamingoes.

  • Via Landolina, near the Piazza Bellini, is lined with bars and clubs. Music is the focus at the bar La Chiave, which usually has a programme of live music and in summer organizes Landolina Live, a full slate of live rock, folk and jazz during June, July and August.

  • Villa Rizzone, Modica

    This Neo-Classical 19th-century villa has an open courtyard planted with palms, while the interior is painted in blue and gold.

  • Vittorio Emanuele Birreria, Sciacca

    In a nice piazza at the end of Sciacca’s Corso sit out under palm trees enjoying the cool evening, live music, drinks and snacks. The setting is pure Sicily, with an up close and personal view of the Palazzo Steripinto across the street, with its deteriorating rustication and a single column articulating the corner. The Piazza A Scandaliato is also lively at night.

  • The interior of the island was taken up with latifondi until well into the 20th century and it’s still an important source of income. Vast valleys and hills are devoted to cultivating Sicily’s special grano duro (see Bread).

  • The prime time is Sunday afternoon or any day from dusk onwards. Walk around a piazza, down a corso or promenade, or anywhere people happen to gather.

  • During the 20th century large estates planted with wheat and other crops started planting vines to produce high-quality wine. Two examples are Regaleali near Vallelunga and Planeta near Sambuca di Siclia.

  • The grape of Pantelleria, used for white wines and predominantly for the rich, full bodied passito .

  • These Modican pastries imported by the Spanish Counts of Modica are empanadas , a pastry crust filled with chocolate, spices and ground beef.
