  • A small hotel in the heart of Ortygia island, in Syracuse. Rooms are spacious and nicely decorated, some with terraces. Parking is available.

  • Small, four-room pensione in the heart of Noto’s historic centre, in a private courtyard (you enter through an arch, hence the name). Great location, serviceable rooms and helpful staff.

  • In a renovated palazzo . Rooms are soundproofed and take in the views of the piazza. Parking.

  • Benedictine sisters welcome you to their 17th-century monastery. Rooms are modern, large and clean, and most have baths. A 10:30pm curfew.

  • Part of the Sole hotel chain, in an excellent location in Trapani’s historic centre. The hotel resembles a grand-mother’s living room despite a recent make-over. Rooms are serviceable and clean. Reserve a parking space in their tiny garage for a small fee. They usually encourage you to go out for breakfast, which is a joy in lively Trapani.

  • Oasi di Selinunte

This classic Italian holiday villaggio offers 89 spots for tents and caravans and a 30-room hotel. Activities include swimming pools, beach access at Selinunte, tennis, soccer, basketball and volleyball. Restaurant on site.

  • A large hostel on the slopes of Mount Etna, at 700 m (2,300 ft) above sea level. There are 70 beds, a number of small bathrooms and special rooms for families. Also a restaurant and bar.

  • Located about 4 km (2.5 miles) from Trapani at the beginning of the steep hill up to Erice. It is a new, rather institutional hostel but with helpful staff; 52 rooms, small bathrooms, a restaurant, and a view out over the Egadi Islands.

  • This small hostel has a planted terrace with sea views, 20 beds in regular and family rooms, kitchen facilities, bar and restaurant.

  • A 10-room pensione in this tiny fishing village. Rooms are nicely decorated with iron or wooden bedsteads, and several have a view of the sea. The ground-floor sitting area has a fireplace and the owners cook excellent Sicilian cuisine, mostly fresh seafood and vegetables from their garden.
